New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has warned that the Belmont Stakes could be canceled if air quality doesn't improve. Racing at Belmont Park was called off on Thursday because of hazy, smoky conditions from wildfires in Canada. It was the second straight day that the bad air affected sports in the northeastern United States. In Major League Baseball, the Washington Nationals' home game against the Arizona Diamondbacks was called off. The Belmont is the final leg of horse racing's Triple Crown. Hochul says it could be scrapped if the air quality index exceeds 200. She says horses will have to undergo additional evaluations if the air is in the 150-200 range.

Major League Baseball celebrations have turned into a full-on production for some teams. About half the clubs in MLB are using some kind of prop or ritual to celebrate a big hit or a big play in ways that often go viral. The Pittsburgh Pirates use a sword and a “home run jacket.” The Minnesota Twins act like they're going fishing. The Baltimore Orioles operate a “human sprinkler.” The players say the celebrations are a way to connect with fans and break up the monotony of a season. Pirates star Andrew McCutchen says players are “showmen” and it's their job to put on a show when they take the field.

NASCAR has issued its second massive penalty in as many days by levying huge fines against Stewart-Haas Racing for an “counterfeit part” found on Chase Briscoe’s car after the Coca-Cola 600. SHR’s No. 14 team was docked 120 points in both the owner standings and Briscoe’s driver standings, and he also was stripped of 25 playoff points. John Klausmeier, the crew chief, is suspended six races and was fined $250,000. The penalties issued Wednesday are the harshest NASCAR can impose under its written deterrence system. It comes a day after Chase Elliott was suspended one race for deliberately wrecking Denny Hamlin on Monday at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

It’s been nearly a decade since there was this much hype surrounding the Spanish Grand Prix. The last time the Formula One crowd in Spain had such high hopes of celebrating a victory by Fernando Alonso was back in 2013 when the two-time champion was driving for Ferrari. Alonso went on to win that race in Barcelona but since then has never been in a realistic position to make it to the top step of the podium again at home. That was his last win in F1 anywhere and the last by any Spaniard in the local race. The 41-year-old Alonso arrives this season revitalized with a strong Aston Martin team.

Ryan Blaney made a race delayed to Monday by rain worth the wait, especially after going nearly 60 races without a victory. Blaney's win at Charlotte gave Team Penske its first-ever sweep of the Coca-Cola 600 and Indy 500 in the same year. The series heads to World Wide Technology Raceway this weekend. Josef Newgarden became the first American to win the Indianapolis 500 since 2016 by passing defending race winner Marcus Ericsson on the last lap. And Max Verstappen was dominant to win for the fourth time in six starts in Formula One. He's won 20 of the past 30 races.

McLaren Racing missed the Indianapolis 500 in 2019 with Fernando Alonso in a humiliating defeat that could have stopped the team from making a full-time move to IndyCar. But McLaren did enter the series in 2020 and has slowly built itself into a top contender. Arrow McLaren will start all four of its cars in the top 12 in Sunday's 107th running of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” The team believes the chemistry it has built inside the organization has helped turn it into one of IndyCar's elite.

Alex Palou seeks consecutive wins at Indianapolis Motor Speedway after claiming the pole for Sunday's 107th running of the 500. He won the Indy Grand Prix there earlier this month. The relative lack of minority-race coaches in prominent leadership roles has been a long-running problem for the NFL. Filling the pipelines with more diverse candidates has been one of the goals. The creation of “accelerator” programs for front office and coaching jobs has been one of the more recent strategies. A pool of 40 coaches participated in the latest edition at the spring league meetings in Minnesota this week. Sixteen of them took part in the inaugural event a year ago. Eight coaches and three executives were hired in new roles after that including Tennessee Titans general manager Ran Carthon.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed former Arizona Cardinals linebacker Markus Golden to a one-year contract. The deal gives the Steelers some depth behind star edge rushers T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith. The 32-year-old Golden has spent most of his eight seasons in the NFL with Arizona, racking up 47 sacks in 111 games with the Cardinals and New York Giants. Golden had 2 1/2 sacks last year for Arizona while finishing with 48 tackles, tied for the third-highest total in his career.

Martín Pérez pitched seven strong innings, Marcus Semien hit his eighth home run and the Texas Rangers held off the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2. Pérez allowed two runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts to win his fifth straight decision. The 32-year-old left-hander kept the Pirates in check inducing 12 groundball outs, with a pair of inning-ending double plays. Johan Oviedo threw the second “immaculate inning” by a Pittsburgh pitcher this season when he struck out the side on nine pitches in the fourth inning. It wasn't enough for the Pirates to avoid falling to 5-15 in May.

The NFL has pushed the kickoff return further toward irrelevance with a priority on player safety. League owners voted for a one-year trial of an enhanced touchback rule that will give the receiving team the ball at its own 25 with a fair catch of a kickoff anywhere behind that yard line. The proposal passed despite an expression of distaste for it from coaches and players across the league. They argued that it will create uglier plays with squib and corner kicks that are impossible for fair catches.

Track and field is introducing new rules and a “short track” format for races run on 200-meter tracks which have traditionally been in enclosed arenas and referred to as “indoor” events. World Athletics says short track world records can be set at indoor and outdoor events under the proposal. Short track world records will be recognized in races from 200 meters up to 5,000 meters and in some other events. The proposal has the backing of World Athletics’ decision-making council and is set to be formally approved at a meeting in August.

The horse racing community was stunned earlier this year when 23-year-old Avery Whisman and 29-year-old Alex Canchari died by suicide less than six weeks apart. The deaths sparked renewed conversation among jockeys about their mental health. Hall of Fame rider Mike Smith has seen colleagues struggle with the stress of the dangerous job. He and other jockeys worry horse racing has lagged behind other sports in accepting that mental health is as important as physical health. Jockeys and stakeholders hope increased attention on the subject prompts real change.

Organizers of the Paris Olympics say they have sold 6.8 million tickets out of 10 million available with 14 months left before the opening ceremony. They have also brushed off criticism that prices are too high. Organizing committee president Tony Estanguet says the second ticketing phase that ended last week exceeded expectations despite some fans and athletes complaining about hefty prices. The most expensive tickets are 2,700 euros ($2,900) for the opening ceremony, and the sports with the highest prices are the athletics, swimming and basketball finals. The cheapest tickets are 24 euros ($26) and were quickly snapped up, leaving just 200,000 low-cost seats available in a later round to the frustration of many buyers.

The Masters will be the most significant major of the year because it showed golf can still be civil amid the great divide caused by LIV Golf. The PGA Championship was the same way. The Ryder Cup should be no different. That's why it's hard to imagine a Ryder Cup without Brooks Koepka. His win at Oak Hill stamped his legacy as the greatest major champion since Tiger Woods. U.S. captain Zach Johnson says it's premature to think about picks. But it's becoming increasingly clear that where a player chooses to play shouldn't matter when it comes to the majors.

NFL owners have approved a flexible scheduling policy for Thursday night games on Amazon Prime Video. The rule covers Weeks 13-17, and teams would have their games moved only with at least 28 days’ notice. The league could push a Thursday night matchup in that range to Sunday afternoon if there is a more desirable game. The mechanism is currently in place for Sunday night and Monday night games. The flexible scheduling for Thursday night games was approved on a trial basis for 2023 only. Owners also approved at their spring meetings a rule allowing teams to play an emergency quarterback from the inactive list if the first two are injured during a game.

Trubisky began 2022 as the starter in Pittsburgh before being replaced by Pickett at halftime of what became a loss to the New York Jets in Week 4.

This weekend’s Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in northern Italy has been canceled because of deadly floods. Formula One said it made the decision for safety reasons and to avoid any extra burden on the emergency services. F1 personnel had earlier been told to stay away from the track after floods affected large parts of the Emilia-Romagna region. Some residents of the nearby city of Imola were warned to move to higher floors of their homes. The Santerno River runs right next to the track. It is the second race on the 2023 calendar to be canceled. The Chinese Grand Prix was scheduled for April but was canceled in December amid concerns about pandemic-related restrictions.

Mason Rudolph is staying with the Pittsburgh Steelers after all. Pittsburgh has signed the longtime backup quarterback to a one-year deal. The contract marks a somewhat unlikely return for Rudolph, who was essentially passed over twice for the chance to become the starter following Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement after the 2021 season. Rudolph is 5-4-1 as a starter in his NFL career, throwing for 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. The signing gives the Steelers an insurance policy behind second-year starter Kenny Pickett and backup Mitch Trubisky.

The Asian Tour is aligned with LIV and has two more events planned for the UK this year. The tour says the fines could range from 12,500 pounds ($15,600) to 100,000 pounds ($125,000) for each tournament played without a release. The difference is based on what kind of impact it had on European tour interests. The tournaments in question are over eight months.

Kentucky Derby winner Mage remains on track to run in the Preakness next week to continue a pursuit of horse racing’s first Triple Crown. He cited trainer Gustavo Delgado's experience with similar time frames in Venezuela. Last year's long shot Derby winner Rich Strike did not run in the Preakness because his owner and trainer thought the horse needed extra rest.
