For the second straight week, the Bedford football team faced an undefeated team.

The Richland Rams rolled up over 400 yards of total offense and scored on their first six possessions to topple the Bisons, 42-13, Friday.

The Rams had 260 yards of passing from the sophomore arm of Kellan Stahl, who threw five touchdown passes in the game. His favorite target was Caleb Burke, who hauled in seven catches for 121 yards and three touchdowns as well as a two-point conversion.

The Rams got the ball to start the game, and it took only three plays to find the end zone. Two plays and penalty resulted in a first down, putting the ball at the Bedford 47. Stahl hit Trevor Tustin on a short pass, but the Ram speedster broke a least three tackles before outrunning the Bison defense for a touchdown reception. With the PAT kick, Richland held a 7-0 lead with 10:22 left in the first quarter.

The Bisons got the ball at the 35 after Richland kicked the ball out of bounds for the Rams’ only penalty of the night. Bedford collected a couple of first downs with a 19-yard run by Mercury Swaim on a third down, and a fourth-down run by Miles Washington for six yards when the Bisons needed one yard.

With the ball at the Richland 22, Bedford got a four-yard run by Elijah Cook before Swaim took a sack for a five-yard loss. Swaim picked up seven yards on a run to set up a fourth down play. The Bisons tried a running play, and they lost yardage to turn the ball over on downs.

Richland marched 80 yards in 12 plays, mixing the run and the pass effectively, Tustin ran for 16 yards, and Burke had four catches for 35 yards including a two-yard touchdown catch. Stahl put the ball up high where only the 6-1 receiver could haul it in, which he did for a 14-0 lead with nine seconds left in the first quarter.

After a Bedford punt, Richland had another big play with a 46-yard touchdown pass to Burke for a 21-0 lead.

Bedford had to punt again, but Burke muffed the punt with Bedford’s Dayne Miller recovering the ball. However, the Bisons gained only four yards on four plays, turning the ball back to over to Richland on downs.

Richland added one more score before the half. Stahl ended a eight-play, 62-yard drive with a six-yard scoring pass to Koby Bailey with 48 seconds left in the half for a 28-0 halftime lead.

“We played very poorly,” said Bedford coach Kevin Steele. “It’s a credit to Richland. They controlled both sides of the line of scrimmage.

“We had a rough night.”

Bedford got the ball first to start the second half, and Richland forced the Bisons to punt. On the Rams’ four play drive, Stahl hit Burke again, this time for a 35-yard scoring strike in which he caused several missed tackles. The Rams missed putting the mercy rule into effect when the PAT kick hit the upright and did not go through for a 34-0 lead.

Bedford got its first score of the game on a 68-yard drive. The Bisons used 12 runs and a 11-yard pass from Swaim to Spencer Ebersole to move the ball down the field. Swaim got the touchdown on a one-yard plunge, but the PAT kick was wide, making the score 34-6.

Richland kept its starters in on offense, and the Rams scored again, mixing the run and the pass. Jacob Sabol finished the 75-yard drive with a one-yard run.

Burke hauled in the two-point conversion pass from Stahl for the 42-6 lead, putting the mercy rule into effect.

The Bisons got the last score on a 40-yard run by Justin Arnold, and Lizzy Martz’s PAT kick set the final at 42-13.

“Richland just dominated the game,” Steele said. “They had a lot of big plays on offense.”
