HYNDMAN — The game between Turkeyfoot Valley and HOPE for Hyndman was close for much of the first half, but when the Rams got an opening they took off.
Holding a five-point lead, the Rams outscored the Hornets 8-2 in the remaining 4:40 of the first half, ultimately winning 71-39, Friday.
The night was highlighted by Hornet senior Banks Stouffer scoring his 1,000th career point.
Stouffer was assisted by Noah Stair as the Hornets opened the game, but back-to-back lay-ups by the Rams gave the visitors a 4-2 advantage.
HOPE for Hyndman’s Alex Cosgrove got a putback and another Stouffer basket was assisted by Stair, pushing the hosts ahead, 6-4.
The Rams added another two baskets, while Eli Shaffer was assisted by Hyndman teammate Dylan Kamauff to tie the game, 8-8, with 2:37 left to play.
Turkeyfoot added three consecutive baskets to take a 14-8 lead before Stouffer tried for a three-pointer as the buzzer rang. Turkeyfoot’s Blake Nicholson was called for a foul and the Hornet went to the free throw line. Stouffer added all three attempts, with his second being his 1,000th-point, cutting the deficit to three points, 14-11.
The Rams opened the second period with a six-point stretch, but Stouffer kept the Hornets within six points with a three, 20-14.
Following a lay-up by Turkeyfoot, Stouffer added another three points to cut the deficit to five, 22-17, but that was the closest the Hornets could come to the Rams.
Turkeyfoot finished out the first half on a 24-2 run. The final two buckets of the first half were three-pointers by Tanner Colefish, beginning a 14-point run that extended well into the second half, pushing the the Rams ahead, 44-19.
The Hornets were zero for seven for field goals scored before Stouffer added a bucket, but the Rams answered with five points.
Cosgrove was fouled as he scored from the paint while the Rams added a three-pointer. Shaffer had a putback for the hosts, but the Rams scored three three-pointers to take a 61-25 lead into the final period.
Colefish opened the fourth with consecutive lay-ups before Stair added a free throw. Stouffer added a pair of buckets and a free throw as the Rams outscored the hosts 8-5, holding on for the 79-31 victory.
Stouffer led the Hornets with 20 points, while Colefish led the night with 41 points.
The Hornets visits Calvary Christian on Monday.
