Bedford Post 113 showed patience in Tuesday’s Cambria County American Legion game against Lilly.

The Hurricanes did not strikeout once, and they put runners on base 22 times with two hit batters, two errors, seven walks, and 11 walks.

Through all of the patience at the plate, the Hurricanes watched as Karson Reffner finished out the game in the fourth with a grand slam to help solidify Bedford’s 16-0 victory.

“This was a good team win,” said Bedford coach Jordan Mills. “We did a better job starting the game strong rather than coming out flat.”

The Hurricanes scored in the first, second, and fourth innings.

Austin Price opened the game on the mound for the Hurricanes with three strikeouts and he led off the bottom of the first. After falling behind, 1-2, at the plate, he was struck by the pitch on the fourth ball. Price stole second before Jared Dowey singled. Price scored on a wild pitch and Dowey scored on an error to put the hosts ahead, 2-0.

Nate Semanek reached on an error before Reffner and Jesse Arnold singled. Arnold’s single scored Semanek to put the Hurricanes up, 3-0.

After the first out, Isaac Whysong singled and was awarded second on an error, with two runs scoring before the error as Bedford took a 5-0 lead before Lilly recorded the final two outs.

Price struck out two batters in the top of the second and got a ground out before leading off the bottom of the second with a double. He stole second before Lilly got the first out.

Nate Semanek and Reffner walked to load the bases. Arnold was hit by the pitch to score Price, while Hall doubled to score a pair of runs and put Bedford ahead, 9-0.

Isaac Whysong knocked in a run and another run scored as Whysong reached on an error. A sacrifice fly by Ryan Mowry scored Whysong and push Bedford ahead, 11-0.

After a scoreless third, Bedford put the mercy rule into effect with a five-run fourth.

Mowry tripled and scored on a single by Price. Thad Leidy walked before both runners advanced on wild pitches. Semanek walked to load the bases before Reffner crushed the ball over the left field fence to secure Bedford’s 16-0 victory.

Reffner pitched the final two innings. He gave up two hits to Lilly.

“We wanted to get Austin Price back into the grove after being off for so long,” Mills noted. “Karson Reffner did a good job coming in and working with his command.

“We got younger guys into the game and they also saw quality at-bats.”

Bedford faces CCAL foe Claysburg on Wednesday. Both teams enter the game undefeated with 6-0 records.

Mills knows his Hurricanes will be ready for the game.

“We always look forwards to playing Claysburg,” he added. “We have a rivalry with them. We respect them. It should be a great game as always.”
