In Monday’s LHAC matchup, Bedford got off to the start it needed, but Westmont showed why its among the best in the league with a big third quarter to topple the Bisons, 65-48.
Bedford held an 11-7 lead after the first quarter and only trailed by 5 at the half, but Westmont pushed the lead to 17 by the end of the third quarter.
In the first quarter, Bedford jumped out to an 11-5 lead with 2 3’s from Matt Edwards, who had a team-high 17 points, as well as a 3 from Jacob Wilson and a basket by Quincy Swaim with 1:10 left in the first quarter.
Westmont followed with a 12-2 run with Jonathan Crocco doing much of the damage with 2 3’s and a field goal for a 17-13 WH lead.
The teams played evenly for the rest of the half with the Hilltoppers holding a 30-25 lead.
Westmont opened the third quarter on a 14-4 run with Ryan Craft hitting 2 3’s as well as a layup as the visitors took control of the game. Bedford did get another 3-pointer from Edwards, who had 5 in the game, but it was answered by a 3 from Crocco.
After Johnny Black got 2 points for the Bisons, Westmont scored the final 4 points of the third quarter for a 51-34 lead.
Bedford tried to get in the game with a 9-3 run to start the final quarter. Kevin Ressler scored 4 points, Quincy Swaim had a 3-point play, and Tristen Ruffley added a bucket that got the deficit down to 11 at 54-43, but Westmont scored 11 straight points, including 2 from free throws for a technical foul on Bison head coach Pete Bordi.
Bedford added a 3 from Cole Taylor and a basket from Owen Tedrow, but the Hilltoppers escaped with a 65-48 win.
“Westmont is a very good team,” said Bordi. “We tried to answer them, but we couldn’t. The shots were definitely not falling for us. Matt had some nice shots, but we had so many that just wouldn’t drop.”
Edwards was the only Bison in double figures with Wilson and Hylton each scoring 6 points.
Craft led all scorers with 23 points, while Crocco added 15.
Bedford’s, 5-9, game against Bishop McCort on Wednesday was postponed.
