FISHERTOWN — With weather a factor, scoring early was going to be a key to winning on Wednesday.
And Chestnut Ridge used that method to earn a 3-0 victory over Greater Johnstown. The game was contested on a 90-degree afternoon and plenty of sunshine.
The Lady Lions showed a lot of offense in the opening minutes and netted the eventual game-winning goal just over eight minutes into action.
That goal came off the foot of Kyra Pittman with the assist credited to Elyse Barnes.
It was Pittman’s third shot on net in the game after missing just wide and also having a ball clang off the post.
Five minutes later, Ella McDonald added to the home team’s lead on a goal with 26:05 showing on the clock.
Chestnut Ridge had a number of other scoring chances in the first half but settled for the 2-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Lady Lions continued to control ball possession on the Lady Trojan side of the field.
The final goal of the day was scored by Audrianna Barnes, who secured the ball off a Johnstown goal kick and put the shot past goalkeeper Rebekka Cannonie.
Overall in the contest, Chestnut Ridge led in shots on goal, 19-1, and also took five corner kicks while the Lady Trojans had none.
“It was a tough game,” said Lady Lions’ coach Jeremy Barnes. “We’ve been working on some new offensive concepts and the girls have been doing well with it. We controlled the possession which is something we want to do.
“They gave a great effort today, and we just have to continue to keep working to get better.”
Chestnut Ridge will be at Forest Hills today.
