SIDMAN — There were no sightings of Drew Carey or Bob Barker at St. Michael for Friday’s Cambria County American Legion League playoff game, but there was no doubt about it — The Price was right.

Bedford’s Austin Price threw a one-hit shutout and retired 18 batters in a row to lead the Hurricanes to a 13-0, six-inning victory over St. Michael, the second-seeded team in the CCAL, in Game One of the semifinal series.

This playoff series is battle of the two teams from the CCAL that advanced to the regional tournament last year, and Game Two will be at Bedford on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Bedford Post 113 team, the third-seeded team, took the lead three batters into the game, put the game away with a nine-run sixth inning, and let Price take over from there.

Price had a hand in scoring that first run of the game. Jared Dowey led off the game with a grounder to third, and he was safe as the St. Michael fielder committed an error. Dowey stole second and went to third on a passed ball. After the first out of the inning, Price went the opposite way with a ground ball into right field for a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first, Seth Richardson had a leadoff single for the Saints. He went to second on an errant pickoff throw and got to third on a deep fly ball to center. Two pop-ups ended the inning, and Richards was the only Saint to reach base.

After the hit, Price retired the next 18 batters and included six strikeouts. He threw under 70 pitches in the six-inning complete game.

“After that first batter, he really settled down,” said Bedford coach Jordan Mills, who also coached Price at Everett High School. “That was one of the top three games I’ve ever seen him pitch. He had all three of his pitches working and kept the ball down on a tough mound to pitch off.

“We fielded the ball well behind him. It was a total team effort.”

Bedford had at least one hit in each inning and 17 in the game against St. Michael’s Jacob Shope, who has been one of the better pitchers in the league the last couple years.

The Hurricanes got a run in the second and two more in the third, all with two outs.

In the second, Calvin Iseminger got a one-out walk, and one out later, Dowey was walked. Drew Hall blooped a single into short right field to bring in Iseminger for the 2-0 lead.

With two outs in the third, Dylan Arnold singled and Nate Semanek walked. Iseminger followed with a line drive that hit off the fence in center field to bring in both Arnold and Semanek to go up 4-0.

Price kept rolling and the Hurricanes finally put the game away in the sixth with nine runs. Iseminger, who had three hits in the game, singled to right. After an out, Bedford had eight straight singles by Dowey, Hall, Price, Ryan Mowry, Isaac Whysong, Arnold, Semanek, and Iseminger. Mowry’s brought in two runs, while Price, Whysong, Semanek, and Iseminger each drove in one run.

After a fielder’s choice cut down Arnold at the plate, Dowey walked, Hall had his fourth hit of the game, and Price singled with each batter driving a run to push the lead to 13-0.

“With a pitcher like Shope, we wanted the batters to run the count up,” Mills said. “We won that battle. That was the best two-out hitting all year. We worked on some hitting in practice.“The kids’ head were held high. We had to battle through some obstacles.”

Price helped himself at the plate with two hits and three RBIs, while Arnold had three hits. Whysong added two. Iseminger scored three runs and drove in three runs, while Hall and Mowry had two RBIs each.

Every Hurricane scored at least one run, eight had at least one hit, and seven had at least one RBI.

If a Game Three is necessary, it will be played on Sunday at 2 p.m. at St. Michael at the Adams Township fields.
