Things can change in a short period of time.
Penn Cambria had a 22-15 lead over Bedford with six minutes left in the second quarter, but Bedford went on a 19-1 run to take control of the game and roll to a 49-38 LHAC girls’ basketball victory, Friday.
The Lady Panthers came out of the locker room strong with a 5-0, but Bedford fought back and tied the game at 11-11 with two minutes left in the first quarter.
Penn Cambria went on an 11-4 run, sparked by their defensive pressure that gave the Lady Bisons troubles early in the game. With six minutes left in the second quarter, Bedford started its game-changing run. Josie Shuke started it with a free throw and Sydney Taracatac followed with a three-point play.
After a Penn Cambria free throw, Bedford finished out the quarter on a 12-0 run with three Shelby Mortimore three-pointers, a Taracatac free throw, and an offensive rebound and putback by Shuke for a 31-23 lead at the half.
Shuke opened the second half with a three for a 34-23 lead.
The two teams played evenly the rest of the way, but the damage by the Lady Bisons was done as they went on for the 49-38 win.
“I was pleased with the effort of the girls tonight,” said Bedford coach Blaine Shuke. “Any time you play Penn Cambria, you know it’s going to be a tough battle.
“We got in trouble with their press, but we figured it out. We hung in there.”
The Lady Bisons got a game-high 15 points from Tracatac, while Mortimore added 11 and Shuke had 10.
“Natalie Lippincott did a really nice job on the boards for us,” coach Shuke added.
