Donald Devoe Donaldson, 74, of Riddlesburg, passed away on March 22, 2020.

He was born on September 12, 1945, in Huntingdon, son of the late Merwyn Devoe and Alma Aileen (Dick) Donaldson.

Donald was united in marriage to Mary Jo (Wineland) Donaldson on December 18, 1966 in Martinsburg.

Donald was a Class of 1963 graduate from Tussey Mountain Jr./Sr. High School. He played football, basketball, and baseball; and was President of his Senior Class and the Honor Society.

After high school, Donald attended North Carolina State University on a full football scholarship. During his time at North Carolina, he lettered and started 3 years in football. Donald played in the 1967 Liberty Bowl game and caught 7 passes with NCSU beating Georgia. He graduated in January of 1968 with two Bachelor Degrees; one in Health and PE and the other in Recreation and Park Administration. Donald held a Master’s degree in Elementary and Secondary Guidance and Counseling from Shippensburg University.

Donald first worked at James Buchanan High School in Mercersburg where he taught Health and PE; he was also the Assistant Football Coach. After 9.5 years he took a job with Tussey Mountain Jr./Sr. High School where he taught for 42.6 years. He began with teaching Elementary PE and Secondary Health and PE and eventually became the High School Guidance Counselor for many years. Donald was Head Football Coach and coached Tussey Softball for 29 seasons.

Donald was inducted into the Bedford County Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. He was a basketball official for 50 years and during this time worked two state finals. Donald was a lifetime member of PSEA, NEA, and BPOE and attended the Six Mile Run Methodist Church.

Donald worked 39 summers as a Seasonal Park Ranger at Raystown Lake.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Jo Donaldson; son, Joseph D. and wife, Becky (Dilling) Donaldson, of Martinsburg; daughter, Amber Jo Donaldson and fiancé, Jason Keith, of Martinsburg; grandsons: Braxton D. Keith, Tylan J. Keith, Braylon D. Donaldson, Hudson M. Donaldson and Lennon C. Donaldson; and twin brother, Jon M. Donaldson and wife, Adina, of Robertsdale.

Due to the recent COVID-19 regulations and restrictions, a Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date. Please check the funeral home website for more information when it becomes available.
