In observance of Memorial Day, the Gazette office will be closed and the e-edition will not be published. Publication will resume on Tuesday with both the print and e-editions.
Last call to back Bedford!
Sunday is the last day to vote in the America’s Main Streets contest, sponsored by Independent We Stand and Stihl USA. Bedfordis one of 25 quarterfinalists and is doing well in the voting, according to Kellie-Goodman Shaffer of the Bedford County Chamber of Commerce. Voting opened on April 27. To vote, go to www.mainstreetcontest.com, click on “nominees,” locate Bedford (the towns are displayed at random) and click on Bedford’s photo. You may vote up to 25 times each day. In addition to the national recognition as America’s Main Street, the winner will receive $25,000, which Downtown Bedford Inc., which entered the contest, has said would be used to replace the borough’s aging Christmas lighting.
The Broad Top Area is planning a Memorial Day observance.
In honor and remembrance of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, the area will “Ring the Bells” for three minutes at noon on Memorial Day, May 25, in Saxton and surrounding areas. The event is co-sponsored by Watson & Black American Post 126 in Broad Top City, American Legion Post 169 in Saxton, Captain Phillips Post VFW Post 4129, American Legion Post 556 in Six Mile Run, Saxton Borough Council, and the Broad Top Ministerium. Commanders of the above posts will join together at noon on Memorial Day to “Ring the Bells.” All churches in the area are asked to participate in the observance and ring their bells.
Road to be closed Tuesday.
Bedford Township officials announced they will close Sweet Root Road, about two miles south of Route 220 and the intersection with Sweet Root, from addresses 1321 to 1209, on Tuesday, May 26, for a tile replacement from 6 a.m. until the job is completed.
