A Johnstown man suffered fatal injuries in a bicycle crash in Colerain Township earlier this week.

State police said Maynard B. Witherell, 78, was biking along the 5000 block of Main Road about 3:30 p.m. Monday when his bike had a suspected mechanical failure with its chain.

Witherell fell and hit his head on the asphalt road. He was wearing a helmet.

Police said Witherell suffered serious injuries from the fall and was flown by medical helicopter to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, where he later died from the injuries.

The Bedford Area Ambulance and Bedford Fire Dept. assisted with the emergency call Monday.
