Organizers of a T-shirt fundraiser that will help establish a scholarship in memory of 12-year-old Laina Haney are grateful for an overwhelming support of the community.

Jennifer Ramsey and Schatze Young, both of Everett, said nearly 300 purple shirts honoring Laina were sold during the first round of fundraising, which concluded Thursday night with an event at the Everett Masonic Lodge.

“It was double what we were expecting,” Ramsey said. “It went very well.”

Laina and her mother, Amanda Jane Figard, were killed in their New Paris home on Oct. 31. Amanda’s husband and Laina’s stepfather, Benjaman Lee Figard, is facing homicide and related charges in their deaths.

A memorial scholarship is being started through the Everett Sportsman Junior Rifle Club in honor of Laina, who had joined the club this year, her first at Everett. She had goals of making the high school team in the future.

The T-shirts being sold include the fundraising effort’s motto, “Live Like Laina.”

Ramsey said the fundraiser has been supported across the county, specifically in the Everett and Chestnut Ridge school district communities. Laina had previously attended school in the Chestnut Ridge School District.

“There was a good mix of students from Everett and Chestnut Ridge and their families who knew Laina,” Ramsey said, noting she also had orders from New York, North Carolina and California.

Ramsey said the fundraiser is being done with the full support of Laina’s father, Jason Haney.

The T-shirts will be purple, Laina’s favorite color, and features angel wings and the motto “Live Like Laina” on the front. The back has the name “HANEY” along with race track victory flags and the number 36, worn by her favorite driver, Travis Calhoun.

The shirts will be printed by Fort Piper Prints in Everett. Ramsey said the first orders of shirts are expected to be ready by Nov. 18.

Another round of fundraising will continue through next week before a second printing order is placed.

The shirts are $10 each. For information or to place an order, contact Ramsey at 814-761-6077, or Young at 814-652-5798 or 285-1453. Orders also can be placed online through the “Laina Haney T-shirt Fundraiser” Facebook page.
