The Bedford County Garden Club has announced its Garden of the Month honorees. Travis and Kimberly Collins of Everett received the Garden of the Month award for June. Picture above, left, with the award sign are, from left, Kimberly Collins with Marilyn Gash, and Denise Wright of the Garden Club committee. The Collins’ flowers on the porch, window boxes, and pots around the house are an eye-catcher on a hot summer day. Mostly bright and colorful members of the petunia family provide the accent for this gingerbread, Victorian house that has been brought up to date by the Collins. In the yard is a giant Ginkgo tree. The Ginkgo tree has leaf fossils dating from 270 million years ago. It was brought to America in the 1700s. The leaves and seeds are used in medicines even today. The Commercial Garden of the Month award went to Sheetz, located in the town of Everett. Bright red Knockout roses and Russian sage keep the front of the gas station/convenience shop attractive throughout the summer. Shown above, right, are, from left, Sheetz employees Natalie Mearkle, Ana Foster, and Casey Lear with Garden Club members Denise Wright and Marilyn Gash.
