A spectacular fire late Friday destroyed a now-vacant motel in Fulton County.

Units from at least four counties were called to the former Days Inn just off Old Route 126 at the Town Hill exit of Interstate 70, about 9 miles south of Breezewood.

Flames from the burning motel could be seen for miles as firefighters responded to the 10:40 p.m. alarm.

Lack of water severely hampered responders; all water had to be carried in by tanker.

Assisting Breezewood firefighters at the scene were units from Everett, Bedford, Southern Cove, and Needmore in Pennsylvania and Orleans, Hancock and Clear Spring in Maryland.

The 64-room motel has been closed since around 2013.

Crews were still at the scene as of 3 a.m.
